Mesembrine / Kanna

Standardized mesembrine extract from fermented Sceletium tortuosum leaves for formulation, product development, and commercial manufacturing.

Quality Botanical Imports supplies mesembrine-focused kanna extracts across a range of standardized concentrations, allowing formulators to select material appropriate to their target inclusion level and application.

Exact mesembrine and alkaloid results are batch-specific and are reported in the applicable analytical documentation.

Current Ingredient Supply

Standardized Mesembrine Extract

QBI's kanna program is centered on measured mesembrine concentration rather than generic extract ratios.

Kanna can vary significantly by plant material, fermentation, production method, alkaloid profile, and supplier. A stated botanical identity therefore does not provide enough information for a formulator who needs a defined mesembrine input.

QBI evaluates standardized kanna material with mesembrine as the primary analytical marker and reviews additional alkaloid information when it is available and relevant to the material.

Standardization Range

Select the Mesembrine Concentration That Fits the Project

QBI works with kanna materials across a 5–20% mesembrine concentration range rather than limiting the portfolio to one fixed extract strength.

5%+

Lower-Concentration Extracts

Suitable for projects where a standardized kanna extract format is desired and the formulation can accommodate a higher raw-material inclusion level.

10%+

Intermediate Concentrations

Provide increased mesembrine concentration while retaining a standardized botanical extract format.

Up to 20%

Higher-Concentration Extracts

Intended for formulations where reducing raw-material inclusion while maintaining a standardized kanna-derived ingredient is important.

Understanding the Specification

Mesembrine and Total Alkaloids Are Not the Same Measurement

A kanna extract can contain multiple naturally occurring alkaloids in addition to mesembrine.

QBI treats mesembrine concentration and broader alkaloid information as distinct analytical data rather than using “total alkaloids” and “mesembrine” interchangeably.

Batch documentation should be reviewed to understand exactly what was measured, the analytical result, and the specification applicable to the material being offered.

Primary Marker

Mesembrine

Additional Alkaloid Information

May include total-alkaloid or individual-alkaloid information depending on the lot and analytical method.

QBI Approach

Identify the measurement clearly and provide the applicable batch-specific result rather than treating different alkaloid measurements as equivalent.

Qualification Process

How QBI Qualifies Kanna Material

1

Supplier Qualification

QBI evaluates production capability, documentation quality, technical responsiveness, commercial reliability, and representative material before scale-up.

2

Analytical Evaluation

Supplier specifications and certificates of analysis are reviewed alongside independent analytical testing where appropriate to evaluate mesembrine concentration and relevant alkaloid information.

3

Commercial Lot Review

Commercial material is reviewed with documentation applicable to the lot being offered. Exact mesembrine results may vary between qualified production lots and extract strengths.

Analytical Documentation

Potency Testing and Full-Panel Testing

Alkaloid potency testing and contaminant testing answer different questions.

QBI's kanna documentation includes analytical information applicable to mesembrine concentration when available for the material being supplied.

Full contaminant testing is not represented as automatically applying to every QBI inventory lot.

When a current full-panel result is available for the offered lot, it can be provided with the applicable documentation. For commercial orders of 1kg or more, additional full-panel testing can also be arranged when required, with laboratory testing charged at pass-through cost.

Testing scope and lead time should be established before a commercial order is finalized when specific testing requirements are important to the application.

Additional Testing May Include

  • Heavy metals
  • Pesticides
  • Residual solvents
  • Microbial testing
  • Additional alkaloid analysis where available
  • Other analyses appropriate to the material or application

Lot Documentation
